Protecting your new hip

Remember that hip replacement surgery can build a good hip, but it is not the same as a normal hip. You need to protect your new hip and use it carefully, even if you feel no pain. The goal of the operation is to relieve pain and improve function during ordinary activities, such as walking, sitting, climbing stairs, and entering a car.

You may be able to do low-impact activities, such as swimming, bicycling, and golfing. However, your doctor may strongly advise against tennis, jogging, or other vigorous activities with repeated impact, which may loosen your hip replacement implants.

Be sure to discuss your planned activities with your doctor or physical therapist.
